meet our 2020 team
L-R: Felicity, Tim and Shan - Directors.

CEO | Founder | Director
Blue Heeler, Mascot, Legend.
Up until November 2019 Sober in the Country was just one volunteer with a laptop and a vision. For the full back story click here.
Today the ''team'' consists of Shan as the CEO and founder; her husband Tim, who we like to call him the founder of the founder; Felicity (also a volunteer) and our systems GURU, and Fleabag - Shan's guard dog and office buddy.
We also have a nationwide 'family' of tens of thousands - and a private support page filled with hundreds and hundreds of rural and remote professionals who never before felt they could discuss their own relationship with alcohol.
SITC is now a ''we'' project and we are very, very humbled to be part of such a life-changing initiative which is all about inclusivity, authenticity, honesty, mateship, and a culture shift for the better.
Shanna Whan (aka Mrs Boss Lady) is the creator, founder, and now CEO of Sober in the Country Ltd. She describes herself as just ''a regular girl from the country'' with a bit of a story that's actually 'ridiculously' common to many. The only thing perhaps unique about Shan, she says, is that she chooses to speak publicly and candidly about this story. Shan overcame her battle with alcohol 5 years ago and decided to risk it all to 'be the change' she saw as desperately overdue in the rural space . So, she took her skills as a career woman from the agricultural sector, her journalism, public speaking, PR, and passion - and set herself the task of changing how we discuss booze in the bush. That single conversation is now a national conversation, a national charity, and her life's work. Her unshakable vision is now a reality and this year she will be travelling Australia where she is being invited by corporates, agricultural giants, community groups, schools, colleges and more to discuss the truth we need to discuss. She is now 'being the change' and leading the change we need.
Tim Whan is Shanna's husband, and the director of his own agribusiness, Rain Agribusiness. He has single-handedly supported and encouraged Shanna to nurture and grow SITC with 100% faith and belief while also being pivotal to saving her life AND starting (and maintaining) a business in the worst drought on record. The man is part-superhero, and really IS as lovely as he seems. Also a gun speaker and boss-man with a solid business mind and the only human on planet earth able to manage Shan full-time.
Flip Nolen is a wonder-woman and one of our co-directors, and a volunteer with a heart of gold. She lives in Leeton and remotely works with Shan and has literally whipped SITC into administrative shape in the past several months. (Which is a Godsend for Shanna!) Flip also comes from a corporate ag background and understands the rural sector well. She also fully ''gets'' the struggles that can come with remote living, and life. As a single gal with plenty of passion, motivation, and skills - the SITC family is very fortunate to have Flip on deck, and we hope that with future funding we can start to pay this lady her weight in gold.
Speaking of extraordinary people and volunteers ... special shout out here. SITC has been supported pro-bono in 2019 by both Roberts & Morrow Chartered Accountants and Webb & Boland Solicitors, Moree. Their donations of time, expertise, and energy have allowed Shanna an easier transition from solo-volunteer to national charity. Their help has been invaluable, and we acknowledge this contribution wholeheartedly.
